In recent times, magic mushrooms have been gaining attention because of their potential to assist in the treatment of certain mental health disorders, particularly depression. A popular approach involves taking a regular dose of approximately 25 mg of the active component, available for purchase from a mushroom dispensary. This dosage seems to offer promising results and could complement traditional depression treatments.

A group of scholars have conducted research indicating that psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, has demonstrated promising results in the treatment of depression.

Major Points:

  • Psilocybin can result in a reduction in depression symptoms in as short as eight days.
  • Side effects of psilocybin are usually manageable and typically range from mild to moderate.
  • A 25mg dosage of psilocybin can trigger changes in perception, mood variations, increased creativity, and a feeling of unity.

One Dose Could Be Sufficient

A recent study employed a rigorous methodology, using a random, multi-blinded design to contrast a single dose of psilocybin with an active placebo (niacin). The study evaluated the onset, benefits duration, and safety of psilocybin over a span of six weeks.

The Subjects

The study targeted individuals aged from 21 to 65 who met the Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) criteria as defined in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and were undergoing a depressive episode lasting at least 60 days.

The Procedure

Participants were administered either a single 25-mg oral dose of psilocybin or a 100-mg dose of niacin. Niacin served as an active placebo, causing an immediate physiological response (flushing) to maintain the blinding integrity.

Both the psilocybin and niacin placebo were given following a standard “set and setting” procedure. The preparatory sessions, conducted with two facilitators, lasted between 6 and The dosing session typically lasted between 7 and 10 hours in a comfortable environment. Participants were invited to contemplate their experiences four hours after receiving the dose.

Insights Gained from the Study

Evidence of depression alleviation became observable just eight days after psilocybin was administered. This promising effect persisted during the six-week follow-up. Psilocybin exhibited higher response and remission rates on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) compared to other research on psilocybin and Treatment-Resistant Depression.

Psilocybin outperformed niacin in terms of enhancing psychosocial functioning. Its usage showed promise in various aspects, such as reducing the overall severity of the disease, easing anxiety, mitigating self-reported depressive symptoms, and improving quality of life.

The majority of participants tolerated the compound well, with only minor to moderate side effects, primarily after the initial dosage. However, psilocybin treatment resulted in more frequent and severe side effects than niacin, which is consistent with our current understanding of its effects.

The researchers highlighted that psychedelics like psilocybin could produce side effects that standard rating scales may not always identify or might reveal previously undetected psychiatric conditions, even while effectively treating specific syndromes.
